This commission was an exception for my “no commission period” during our time in Italy because it is for our friends that we truly would not have been able to do this whole move abroad without their tremendous support & love. It was also a blast to make this concept come to life, play with a new style of painting, and now it gets to live in their beautiful home!

What started as paint play on a large canvas 2 months ago,
through the many phases of color schemes and concepts,
became the first painting you shall see when you enter our “Casa Colobrì” ❤️

“La Pupa”

La Pupa or its official title “Lampada senza luce” is found in the heart of Galatina, sculpted by local artist Gaetano Martinez and inaugurated on April 4th, 1936. “Lamp without a light” represents a light of reason and beauty that exists even when the “lamp” (society or authority) refuses to provide it.
Oh, how we can still relate to that nearly a century later.

This painting is not yet for sale and will remain in our Galatina home for the meantime 🫶🏼

“Pica Pica” is the scientific name for the Eurasian Magpie, this carnivorous bird of Puglia that goes by many names:
“Gazza”, “Ciola”, “Cola Cola”, “Picaloja”, etc.
There was something about this bird swooping through the ravines of Salento that caught my attention and curiosity during our first trip to this region of Italy in 2025. So it’s one of the first pieces I wanted to create after we moved into our first home in this area in 2026 ✨

Vesuvius 8 years ago, I had no idea it would live on through many versions, be it prints, on bags, or on my business card 🫶🏼 To create another version, much larger, with different paint and found materials, was pure experimental joy ✨

I gifted this painting to my sister’s family of their beloved pup, Leia, after they lay her to rest ❤️ I got to spend many months living with them and taking walks/runs with her around Sant’Agata, witness her shark-like abilities to snatch food off of the table (loves her carbs), and enjoy that beautiful, happy smile on her face, tongue and all, after a nice head massage or big hug. She was a great big sister to Gabri and the best of friend to Emily and Alfonso all these years.
Leia, you will be so missed, but your spirit will live on forever, running happily around the open fields of Italy and in our hearts. ❤️
